Totem
● Sound Design Made in Italy
Designed in 1971 by Mario Bellini, totem is a celebration of the primary and elementary forms that make up and regulate our physical world. An ode to geometric regularity that comes at the end of a long meditation on form and function. A simple white cuboid that opens up and is reconfigured in a sophisticated Hi-Fi listening machine.
Mario Bellini
Shop nowMario Bellini began his career in 1963 as head of industrial design at Olivetti. He later collaborated with Cassina, Flos, Artemide and, of course, Brionvega, among others. During his career, he was awarded the Compasso d’Oro several times.
Brionvega
Shop nowFounded in Milan in 1945 under the name BP Radio S.r.l., the company assumed its definitive form and name in 1960 when engineer Pajetta left the company. Entirely under the control of the Brion’s from then on, the company entered the world of industrial design and took on the new name Brion Vega Radio Televisione S.a.s. Thus was born the Brionvega brand and company, one of the brightest stars in the constellation of Italian design.
Sound to Worship
The opening sequence ofStanley Kubrick’scinematic masterpiece2001:A Space Odyssey is so emblematic that it has become part of the collective imagination of modern society. At first intimidated, the apes come into contact with the object and from this contact instinctively learn how to handle objects and use them as tools and weapons.
It is hard not to think of Bellini’s masterpiece. Of his Totem, to be more specific: conceived in 1971, it represents the Milanese designer’s adoption of a formal regularity at the end of a long study of form and function.
Each totem is a unique and exclusive piece of craftsmanship that respects a completely artisan controlled production process of the highest precision. A process that combines the control and technology of machines with the heart and passion of our craftsmen.
The buttons, potentiometers and shells of the main body are made with numerically controlled milling machines. Every part of Bellini’s totem is hand-varnished with the utmost care. Every aspect of the product is the work of the most highly-skilled craftsmen, who are supervised by our sound professionals: the sanding, the assembly of the different components and the application of the silk-screen prints are all processes through which traditional Italian craftsmanship makes every totem unique.
